After completing his Business Management studies, Tom van der Hout (21) was looking for his first job. Through his network, he came across WNL and decided to visit the company to learn more about the business and the role. It did not take long for him to feel at home. “I really liked it from the start.” Almost two years later, he is still enjoying his time at WNL.
More than preparing quotations
As a Sales Representative, Tom usually starts his day by catching up on his emails. From there, his day consists of handling enquiries, preparing quotations and speaking with customers. Occasionally, he visits customers to discuss projects in person. “What I enjoy most is the contact with customers. I like finding out what a customer really needs.”
According to Tom, sales is about much more than offering a competitive price. Product knowledge is just as important. “Customers don’t just want someone who says yes to everything. You need to be able to explain why a certain solution is the best fit.”
That is also one of the most important things he has learned at WNL: how to translate technical product knowledge into practical advice that genuinely helps the customer.
Every project is different
When Tom first joined WNL, the world of greenhouse construction and horticultural insulation was largely new to him. At first, one of the biggest challenges was the amount of knowledge involved. Today, that variety is exactly what keeps the work interesting. “Every project is different. In the beginning, I mainly had to learn which solution to use in which situation.”
Once a project has been sold, a smooth handover to departments such as Project Engineering and Production is essential. All agreements and information provided by the customer need to be communicated clearly within the organisation. Seeing the finished project makes the process even more rewarding. “When you get to see the final result, that’s always great.”
Becoming more independent
Over the next few years, Tom wants to continue developing his ability to win and manage projects independently. “I’m still young and have a lot to learn. Eventually, I want to be able to handle things directly with customers and take responsibility for projects myself.”
The working atmosphere at WNL gives him plenty of opportunity to do so. According to Tom, people work hard, but there is always room for a joke. “There are great colleagues here, and you can pretty much tell anyone what you think.” It is a great environment for Tom to continue developing his skills and growing within WNL in the years ahead.
